A Spoonful of Sugar...

Just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down....!

I made these very tiny jars of old fashioned candy for Christmas. The jars were hand-blown (by my glassblower friend on the East Coast) and then I filled them with candy which I made myself (from polymer clay of course - I never use pre-made canes...!) Each candy is different - some have hearts, some have rainbow colours, some have Christmas trees or snowflakes etc. Then each jar was finished off with a silk ribbon and gold cap.
The photo above shows them sitting in a teaspoon - not a tablespoon!

There is only one of each. You can use them in your one inch scale (1:12) or even half inch scale (1:24) miniature scene as they're small enough. They measure only 9/16" (1.4 cm) in height.

In other news....
There is a competition currently running at my other blog. Just follow the simple rules to enter and in 2 minutes you could be in with a chance of winning your chosen item (worth up to $200). Click over to the other blog and find out how. Good luck!

My Workspace... Building my Retro Kitchen!

I've been a bit quiet about this, but have been slowly building out a colourful vintage / retro kitchen in one inch scale (for a project and also magazine feature I'll share soon).

The space was built by me out of MDF (and in part, foamcore). I made several pieces of the furniture, and other pieces were altered by me quite significantly (see previous post about the kitchen island here and about the hutch/dresser here). I made wooden panels for the back wall, and have put days of work into it. Here are some in-the-making photos I have taken along the way. I'll share the finished project here and on my Facebook page in a week or less.

Note that there are fun and unique kitchen goings-on at my other blog (here) so check that out too!

Don't forget to follow and like!

PS The last two photos were quick snaps of the kitchen as it is today but I am still arranging the furniture and making changes, so the finished kitchen will be different... ;)

Marble-top Kitchen Island

Starting to create my furniture range for Hummingbird Miniatures.... here's a piece I did today. I actually didn't make this one - it's a kitchen counter that came heavily varnished with these adorable little white storage trays. I sanded it down to the bare wood, painted it and created a faux marble counter top.

Here's a 'before' photo.

Much more furniture to come and a good deal of it made from scratch... ;)

Don't forget to enter my mini food jewelry competition which is currently happening on my Facebook page (ends on Sunday).

And keep an eye on my Hummingbird Miniatures online shop for new bread and pastries which will be made available soon.

Easter Eggs and Easter Candy

Oh, I am so pleased to see my fluffy Easter chicks are popular! There's still lots more left at my online store, so take a look. :)

When I was little my mum always cut branches from the garden and then I'd help her hang little painted real or wooden eggs from the branches, and it would be the center piece in the house all Easter. I loved it. So that was my inspiration when I made these little Easter Egg Decorations. Available without hangy threads so you can display in a bowl, or with a gold hangy loop so you can hang from your own Easter tree. Just read the item description for more info.

Then we have Easter candy eggs in a hand-blown glass jar (not blown by me, but by another artist). I only made one of these.

FYI the COMPETITION on this blog (here) has now closed. Results announced soon...!

POP ART Collection - Dishes

Can you *hear* the colour?! These unique hand-painted ceramic dishes are part of my new Pop Art Collection and a great way to bring some colour into your miniature scene during the drab season, don't you think?!

They have fancy French pastries (called religieuses) painted on them, so they'd look great in a swanky patisserie or cake shop, as well as a modern kitchen scene. Not sure what a religieuse pastry is? Click here for a previous post all about these classic French treats. :)

I'll be listing them tomorrow at my online shop, which as you know is at: www.hummingbirdminiature.etsy.com

Dish it up this Christmas

Hand-painted by myself - these little Christmas Dishes are in one inch scale (naturally!) Find them at my online shop throughout Dec and order soon if you don't live in the UK and want one in time for Christmas!

Took these photos just before I left Los Angeles... miss that sunshine! Look at it spilling onto the scene. Well, we'll just have to see how my photos start to look now that they'll be taken in the UK!!

Cupcake Dish

Whilst painting my Easter Dishes I decided to use some of the pretty pastel coloured paints I'd mixed up to paint some non-seasonal dishes to keep in the Kitchenware section of my shop. So here's my little Cupcake Dish. It's pretty detailed - the cupcake has tiny sprinkles on it and everything is finished with highlights of silver. Only 2.1 cm. :)
