Mexican Food Jewelry Range

I've been creating all sorts of Mexican food in 1:12 scale miniature lately, which you might have noticed if you follow me on Instagram (here)!

Alongside that, I've created lots of this miniature food as jewelry! It's super cute, and has that realism that makes it a fun talking point whenever you wear it.

Here's some snaps of the 'making of' process, and links below to the jewelry, which is all available now at my Hummingbird Miniatures online Etsy shop!

Happy Valentine's Day 2015!

Where did the last month go?! If you're ever wondering where I've disappeared to, since I don't update Hummingbird Miniatures or my other blog with the frequency I used to, it's probably because I am busy over at Tall Tales Productions, creating miniature model sets and working towards a stop-motion short film. You can keep up with this here at the blog, or here at the Facebook page.

So... here at Hummingbird Miniatures I have been creating cakes, cakes, cakes! I have made a cute new range of detailed black forest (gateaux) cakes, to my own design and also started creating a whole new range of miniature birthday cakes with candles.

Here's a glimpse into my workspace below. One inch scale black forest cakes, made by myself with huge attention to detail out of polymer clay. These miniature cakes have two kinds of cherries (dark and also maraschino (glacé) cherries on top, which are lighter and brighter, and there's cream inside the cake and chocolate frosting on the top. So they were a lot of work and will be available at the online Hummingbird Miniatures shop just as soon as we re-open. Email me if you're interested in reserving one!

Have a wonderful Valentine's Day all! x x x x

An English Christmas Roast

Gosh, where have I been?! I know that's what you must be thinking, unless you follow my 'Caroline blog' (HERE) as I haven't blogged since October! Well, let me fill you in...

In a nutshell, I have had two exhibitions on and so I worked like a crazy person for the past 10 weeks to get everything done! The exhibitions are ongoing right now. One is in Burbank, California (details here on my Caroline blog) and the other is in Shanghai, China (more details here), and I just got back from China yesterday! I'll share all sorts of photos of the exhibitions soon.... but for now, here are some photos of new Christmas miniatures to begin to celebrate Christmas 2014 over at Hummingbird Miniatures! I made this Christmas scene as part of my Shanghai exhibition. There is a roast turkey on a tray with greens and cranberries, a dish of mixed roast veg (zucchini / courgette, carrots and parsnip), a dish of Brussels sprouts, a dish of roast potatoes and plates with very English crackers. The silk table runner has hand-painted trees and there's a holly table decoration with candles and oranges and two golden potted mini trees. This entire table will be available for sale as 1 piece after the exhibition ends (Jan 2015). Attached are hand-blown glass wine goblets, ceramic plates, hand-painted cutlery, a red cotton table cloth and a wooden bread board with sliced bread. To reserve this piece feel free to email me directly.

Below are 'making of' photos as well as close-ups of the finished piece.

I'll re-open my online Hummingbird Miniatures Etsy shop today as well!

Dreamworks Birthday!

I know it's been a while since I blogged here at Hummingbird Miniatures. It's been a busy year, and I often have time only to update my 'Caroline blog' or it's Facebook page these days. You can get updates more often by following those pages. :)

Anyway, recently a friend of mine had a birthday. He happens to be the Lead Concept Artist for Dreamworks, so I wanted make him my best ever miniature cake, with my new, incredibly tiny and 'unbreakable' candles*. I made the little wooden tray for it and painted the little knife with my Hummingbird Miniatures signature dots!

If you'd like a perfectly detailed tiny little birthday cake like this (or want to design your own), then send me an email or leave a comment, or find me through the Hummingbird Miniatures Facebook Page here.

* My new unbreakable candles are made using a different method and medium than I have used in the past. Because they are no longer made using polymer clay, they don't snap easily. They are handmade by myself to a high standard and are possibly the smallest miniature candles on the market. I call them 'unbreakable' because they do not break easily. If you drop your cake then the chances are the candles will not break. However, if you try to break them then I am sure you will succeed!

Cake for Cake's Sake

I am flying to England today for my sister's wedding, and I'm super excited about it! But I just wanted to share something new with you all before I fly off. I have been working on some new cake trays of all kinds and here's some photos of a finished one. It's a blue cake on a wooden painted tray and it has one of my signature Hummingbird Miniatures dotty forks. I made the trays and everything else you see.

If you're interested in purchasing one of my new cake trays (don't forget you can personalize them - choose the colour, have a birthday cake with candles / a black forest cake / a cake like this blue one with strawberries etc etc) then just email me or leave a comment and I'll arrange a commission. They're so cute and tiny (approx 1.5 " in width) and make a perfect unique gift - even for someone who does not have a dollhouse.

Don't forget about my new range of birthday cakes, coming to my online Hummingbird Miniatures Etsy shop soon!

Take a look at my 'work in progress' on this new 'Cake Tray' range below!

Preparing for Easter...

A couple of years ago I came up with fluffy plush toy chicks in one inch scale miniature, as well as plush toy Easter bunnies. They were pretty popular so this year, even though I didn't have much time to create a new Easter Range as such, I have made many many more Easter chicks! Take a look at my 'work in progress' photo below.

Here are some of my Easter items which are also available this year. There are a few Easter bunnies left and only ONE Easter cake left. After that this cake design will be discontinued.

My Workspace - Writing Desks...

As part of my new Furniture Range, I have been working on some writing desks. I hand-painted both of them by using reference photographs of real antique pieces of furniture from Italy and Japan. One has been painted in a Japanese style with black and gold colour scheme, and a cherry blossom and mountain design. The European one is based on the flowery swirling patterns on an antique Italian desk.

As you can see, I have also been creating accessories which will work in a library / study environment. I've created tiny quills and inkwells and also candles in candle-holders. Stay tuned for them to be listed at my online Hummingbird Miniatures shop.

Making Christmas 2013...Part 2

Still creating a little Christmas magic over at Hummingbird Miniatures, and thought I'd share some snaps from this morning and yesterday.

I hand-painted a buffet / sideboard and created a faux marble top to it and added gold details. Here it is below when I bought it (stained with dark wood-stain), then with a coat of primer and then *almost* finished.

I've also been making very pretty luxury items akin to the sort of things you'd see in English shops, such as Harrods, Harvey Nichols and Fortnum & Mason such as festive topiary and wreaths... stay tuned for finished items!

Making Christmas... 2013!

I've recently started making some small Thanksgiving / Christmas 2013 Ranges, starting of course with some roast turkeys (last year I did roast goose as part of my Christmas 2012 range for a change).

I decided to upload some photos of these roast birds in-the-making because I am keen to ask everyone's opinion. Do you prefer partially carved roasts, or do they look better un-carved?

Please take a look at my quick snaps and tell me if you think I should carve all my birds or leave them un-carved? I'm selling these as collectors items of course (they're not for a larger commissioned project for a change) so that's why I ask your opinion! Leave a comment on this blog or on my Hummingbird Miniatures Facebook page. Thanks so much!
